I’ve set this page up so that you may have more information on the product you sell.  I purchased a 17XG version V01-1B directly from you.  We are currently in Southern Mexico headed for the Panama Canal and then North and East to the Eastern Caribbean for 3 years.  The Navionics Gold 17XG is part of my primary navigation instrument running on a 12.5” Raymarine  C-Series chartplotter.  I have found errors of more than 2.2 miles in some areas making the use of the C-Series almost worthless at times.
Navionics 17XG chart errors along the
Mexican Coast.  Mazatlan to Huatulco.

This shot is of ‘Chicala’.  The offset was almost 1.5 miles.  The anchorage can just be seen at the top of the page.  Quite interesting sailing ‘Jungle Covered Hillsides’
‘Rounding Punta Ethopia’
We were in fact a mile off the point at the time this shot of the screen was taken
I found it interesting that the Garmin World Chart (no Blue Chart in unit) on the 172 was far more accurate rounding ‘Punta Ethopia’ than the Navionics Gold local chart
‘Careyes’
In this picture I used the ruler function to show the distance and position of the boat at anchor.
.981 miles off.
‘Bahia Tenacitita’
cursor is not placed in boat position.
Boat anchor position is at opening in lagoon.
You can see the entire track through bay is off.
‘Caleta Ce Campos’
Comparison of radar to chart.
cursor at boat position .941 nm off.
The #1 bouy at Lazaro Cardenas was spot on correct.
‘Isla Grande’ Around the corner from ’Ixtapa’.
Boat position is that of cursor.  .277 NM from position.
Lazaro Cardenas Tides (C-series Navionics)
This shows a high tide of a +28 feet.
Lazaro Cardenas Tides from Mr. Tides (Macintosh) program.  Correct tide are in the bottom right corner.
Puerto Angel
cursor position showing chart error of 1.170nm.
Huatulco
cursor showing chart error of 1.234 nm.
The photo of the screen of the C-Series was taken while attempting to enter ‘Caleta de Campos’  along the Mexican Pacific coast during the night.  We had to wait till daybreak as the chart was almost a mile off and entering would have been dangerous.  You can see by the relationship of the radar image and the 17XG image that attempting to come in at night with no moon is quite disconcerting.  I put the cursor on the correct position so that you can see how far off the chart is.
I started just taking shots of the screen and then discovered that by putting the cursor in the correct position it might be of benefit to you. (The first few photos of the screen do not have that feature)  There is also no chart offset in the system so you will be able to see the error of each image.    I understand that for the most part you are just making a Vector image of the official raster charts now in use but again, this information may be of use to you in future versions.
For the most part, all the charts from San Diego Bay to Mazatlan were very good but when we left Mazatlan it all started to fall apart. There are also times when the chart is spot on accurate. This is of course with new upgraded local marinas etc. I have also included a photo of the ‘Tides’ listed on the 17XG at Lazaro Cardenas. The 17XG has them at 28 feet when in fact it should be only a couple of feet.

I realize that when I turn on the C-Series as when any chartplotter is turned on there is a ‘Navigation Warning’ that must be acknowledged. I also realize that charts are only as good as the data that they are made from. I hope you will find his page of value to you in future versions of your 17XG electronic chart.

If you would like, I will be happy to continue to take shots of the screen for you to use as we continue our trip through the Panama Canal, the Western Caribbean, and also the Eastern Caribbean.

If there is an upgrade to the chip that is available please let me know. I’m concerned with the accuracy of the charts as we continue our 2 year cruise.

Again,  If you would like me to continue to document discrepancies I find during our cruise please let me know.  I believe that by photographing the screen with the cursor in the correct ships position it could be of value.
